The setup that decides how this goes
The software matters less than most curriculum-fair debates suggest. What matters more:
- A dedicated spot that isn't a bed or a couch. Same chair, same table, every day. Location is a stronger habit cue than a schedule.
- One device per student where you can. Sharing turns into negotiating, and negotiating eats the morning.
- Restrictions during school hours, set once. A device that also holds YouTube asks a nine-year-old to win an argument against people paid full-time to make it unwinnable. That's not a fair fight.
- Paper next to the keyboard. The screen delivers and checks; the hand does the thinking.
- A fixed start time. Flexible start times are the most reliable way to end up doing school at 4 p.m.
If a previous run fell apart around week three, that's ordinary, and usually not about your child's discipline. Most platforms are built to look good in a demo, not to survive a sick toddler in the house.
What a workable day looks like
Blocks, not a bell schedule:
- 1. Hardest subject first, 30–45 minutes. Usually math. Attention is cheapest to rent in the morning.
- 2. Second core block, 30–45 minutes. Language arts, or whatever your child resists least.
- 3. A break, off the device entirely. Outside if possible — not a different screen.
- 4. Reading, 20–30 minutes. Out loud or independent, off-screen if you can.
- 5. One rotating subject. Science Monday and Wednesday, history Tuesday and Thursday.
That's roughly three hours of real work for elementary and four to five for middle and high school — well short of a school day.
The Friday check that keeps you honest
Fifteen minutes, once a week, prevents most of the ugly surprises:
- Open the actual work, not the summary screen. Read three or four things your child produced.
- Find something they got wrong and ask them to talk through their thinking.
- Spot-check one skill the program marked "mastered" — cold, no hints.
- Ask what was boring. Boredom here is usually a difficulty problem, not an attitude problem.
A program that shows you a green progress bar and never the underlying work is a program you can't audit. That's the one hard requirement worth holding on anything you're considering.
Where the computer shouldn't be the teacher
Some things degrade badly on a screen:
- Early reading instruction and handwriting mechanics
- Discussion of anything with more than one defensible answer
- Lab work, building, cooking, music practice
- Any moment your child is frustrated. Software reads a wrong answer. It can't read a child who's about to cry.

Cap the passive portion, keep breaks fully off-device, and keep handwriting in the day. Household screen totals often drop, since school screens displace entertainment ones.
